God is Revealed as We Gather

*Choral Call to Worship “Come All You People” (#39 P&W Songbook)

*Spoken Call to Worship (by Jan Richardson)

And the table will be wide.
And the welcome will be wide.
And the arms will open wide to gather us in.
And our hearts will open wide to receive.
And we will come as children who trust there is enough.
And we will come unhindered and free.
And our aching will be met with bread.
And our sorrow will be met with drink.
And we will open our hands to the feast without shame.
And we will turn to each other without fear.
And we will give up our appetite for despair.
And we will taste and know of delight.

*Opening Hymn    “De Colores”         #402  (first stanza in Spanish followed by English verses)

Unison Prayer of Confession

O God of love, hope, and help, we are so blessed with family and friends, many of us do not know deep loneliness. We are enough at ease that we often do not notice the bitter tears of others. Our collective affluence and privilege make it hard to understand those who are broken by the anger and brutality of the world. A quiet kind of fear often lurks in our hearts.

Yet, you. O God, know of deep suffering. You hear the cries of the oppressed and threatened, and you call us to listen. Your tears mingle with those who cry in frustration and grief. Your faithfulness is great, though ours seems so insignificant. Teach us to serve the world alongside your Child, Jesus, even as he served us with his life. Amen.
