God is Revealed as We Gather
Choral Call to Worship “Bless the Lord My Soul”
*Responsive Call to Worship adapted from Thom Shuman
On this day we gather in this place, as God’s people to worship.
And though we have different gifts, we are all blessed by God.
On that great day of Pentecost, the disciples gathered together.
And though they were uncertain, they trusted God’s future; though many, they were one in Christ.
On the last day of all time, all God’s daughters and sons will be together, in one place.
Until then, we will talk of and live into God’s dreams, with every breath we take, with every moment we live.
*Opening Hymn “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” (#293)
Unison Prayer of Confession Thom Shuman
In the arguments which divide us, Hope’s Heart, we cannot hear your voice calling us to be one. In the rush to judge others who speak, dress, or look different from us, we cannot stop to experience your grace. In our devotion to our selves and our needs, we cannot open our hearts to receive your gifts.
Silence our babbling lives, Sculptor of Salvation, so we might hear the clear, sweet voice of the Spirit, announcing that we are forgiven and calling us to proclaim the good news of your love to all the world.

Poem “Peter’s Story” Gary Boelhower
by Gary Boelhower
Gathered in this dark room again, this safe darkness,
This hideout for the hopeless
With all these grieving hearts and shaking knees.
John says he still wants to love him.
Matthew still wants to tell his story.
But we are all too afraid to speak or sing or hope.
And here I am, the rock he called me,
Yes, the rock of silence and doubt.
I’ve stopped my weeping but not my fear of crucifixion.
Will they nail us too?
Most days, it’s just a numbness now.
Me the betrayer, the one who refused to say I even knew him.
How shall we ever open the door again?
How shall we ever dream or sing?
How did he fool us into believing?
A whole city with bread for every hunger,
Welcome for every stranger,
A visitor for every sick one, for every prisoner, for every lonely heart.
What now? What now?
Do we dare to remember him? to break the bread?
To tell the story?
What if we allow ourselves to be touched with his fire?
To let his word spark in us, ignite our voices, kindle our hopes and actions for justice?
Dare I become flame?
With my small life, dare I become flame?
