*Responsive Call to Worship
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy burdened.”
With joy we come to lay our burdens down.
Jesus said, “…and I will give you rest.”
With delight, we settle into the serenity of this Sabbath.
Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.”
We take up your yoke sweet Jesus; it binds in delicate balance the opposing forces within us and about us—spirit and flesh, action and rest, clarity and confusion, individual and community, fear and courage.
Jesus said “…for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find comfort for your soul.”
We find our soul’s comfort in picking up your weightless burdens of gratitude for all that has been and hope for all that is to come.
Let us sing our worship praises with joy and thanksgiving.
For we know the Power of your Loving Spirit is moving in this place.
*Opening Hymn: “God of the Sparrow…” (#32 black hymnal)
Unison Prayer of Confession adapted from Bill Wessner
We turn our faces and open our hearts to one another and to Our God. You send your saints and prophets; You give us your word; You call us to turn to your way. Yet we wait for our feelings of regret before we listen.
You place us into Beloved Communities of faith to share our mutual witness, but we dilly-dally and delay, only to default back into on our own self-serving ways.
You promise us great reward for lives of discipleship; but our expectations anticipate grand future events and blind us to a daily faith made up of small treasures – a daily devotional with You, the warm greeting to a loved one, the heart-felt “I’m sorry, please forgive me.”
Protect others Lord from our acts of ingratitude and ignorance.
Forgive us Lord for the sins we know in our hearts.
Save us Lord from the sins we hide from ourselves.
