“Ties That Bind” Quilting Update
Making quilts for the Steve O’Neil apartments
By Jo Johnson, creator and chief mover of Ties that Bind!
We are so close….. and maybe will have exceeded our initial goal shortly if all promised projects can be finished and turned in.
The October 11 quilting retreat here at Peace was lots of fun with folks from multiple churches involved. People came and went all day, lots of work got done, and a break for lunch gave us an opportunity to socialize a bit and view unique welcome cards, designed by a friend, that will be packaged with each quilt as presented to the folks. By the end of the day we had tied three quilts, bound two, and labeled 34 finished beauties, all ready for the Steve O’ tenants as they move in to their new apartments.
This has been a beautiful project and such a blessing for so many; the quilters, the donors, CHUM, and ultimately the children and families who will soon find homes and supports they’ve not experienced in the past. I know that I have had fun, gotten to know a lot of people better, and made some new friends. I am hoping those of you who were able to participate have experienced the same. Going forward we will have only one more quilting night at the church before the end of the calendar year, then some of us have talked about continuing quarterly sessions in the year ahead to take care of turnover in that program. In addition, there are other “stitching” needs beyond the quilts, but we will talk about those possibilities as we move into the next phase.
Thank all of you here at Peace, all the women from the other churches who have participated, neighbors, and other community members who have heard about the project and brought us their gifts, shared their talents, and opened their purses to help this project. You have all been doing the work that God has asked of us.
