Ushering
Please read through these instructions and feel free to ask any member of the Worship & Arts Committee if there is any area you feel unsure about. If you have problems with the lighting, under the altar is an instruction sheet. There is also a procedural booklet behind the sliding door cabinet with the offering plates with ushering information.

We remind ushers scheduled for the first Sunday of the month that you will be assisting with Communion. If this is your first time with Communion and you have questions, please ask Pastor Kathy prior to your scheduled Sunday.

If you are not able to usher on your scheduled dates, we ask that you find a replacement.
  1. Ushers are an important part of the worship service and should do their part to see that the service runs smoothly and in a dignified manner. Thank you for offering to be an usher.

  2. Ushers should be at the church 20 minutes before the service begins.

  3. The Eternal Candle should be lighted 15 minutes before the start of the service.

  4. On the first Sunday of each month, ushers will assist with the serving of Communion. If this is new for you, please check with Pastor beforehand to find out specifics.

  5. Sanctuary doors should be closed as soon as the ushers begin. (Fifteen minutes before the service starts. This will be meditative time for worshippers.)

  6. An adult usher should ring the Peace Bells at the proper time. Use the light switches only as you have been instructed, as changing some of them creates future problems. (Instructions are on the wall next to the switches.)

  7. .Ushers should distribute the bulletins at the doors. Please make sure that every adult who wants one receives a bulletin. One usher should stay in the narthex immediately after service starts to give latecomers a bulletin. Please assist people with finding seats, ESPECIALLY when it is crowded.

  8. Side ushers should make sure a count is taken in the sanctuary and in the nursery and the total recorded on the paper provided which should be placed on the office desk.

  9. One adult usher should sit near the rear to take care of latecomers, or be aware of any disturbance in the narthex.

  10. If three or more people are in a pew, pass the offering plate down the pew. If there are less than three, hold the plate for the individuals.

  11. Two ushers will carry the offering plates forward at the proper time and remain in the front for the offertory prayer.

  12. The usher who sits near the rear should open the sanctuary doors when the minister comes down the aisle at the close of the service.

  13. After the service has ended, the ushers should pick up bulletins, paper, etc., and straighten the hymnals, making sure hymnals are placed in the racks. Pull out the slip for the current Sunday from the Friendship pads and place them in the office.

  14. As far in advance as possible, an usher who must be absent should find a replacement.

  15. Please dress appropriately, avoiding jeans, tennis shoes, and sweatshirts, if possible.

  16. Please remember that being an usher is a gift of time and service you are giving to the Lord and should be treated with dignity and respect.
