Staffing the nursery

Thank you for volunteering to staff one of the church nurseries. Please find your own replacement if you cannot make it on your scheduled Sunday. Negotiate a trade and then call the church so the change can be noted on the posted schedules.

In addition to volunteer staff, we have a hired staff member. If, on your Sunday, there aren’t many children, and if you think the mix of ages is okay, you may combine the nurseries. If there are more volunteers than needed to care for the children, divide the work so each of you can attend a portion of worship. If you are not needed in your nursery, please check in the other nurseries before leaving.

  1. The purpose of the nurseries is to provide a safe, supervised playtime for infants and preschoolers during 10:30 am worship. For the sake of the children in your care, the following guidelines are recommended:
  2. Please be prompt and arrive to staff the nursery by 10:15 am.
  3. Wear a nursery volunteer nametag so parents and visitors can identify you.
  4. Birth to 3 year olds will be in the baby room on the right hand side of the hallway. 4-5 yr olds will be in the playroom across the hall.
  5. For insurance purposes, there must be two adults overseeing the nurseries. Doors to the rooms should remain open if only one adult is present.
  6. Ask the parents to sign their children in and out each week. This year we are also asking that all children are registered for safety reasons. Therefore if children are new to the nursery please have the parents fill out a registration form before leaving their child. All children registered will have a permanent name tag. If the child does not have a name tag they are new to the nursery. Please remind them to leave their name tag when they leave.
  7. The nurseries are not for children older than kindergarten. Older kids are invited to attend worship with their parents. Kids older than this who are helping their parents in the nursery may stay and help, however.
  8. If a child is sick, very unhappy, misbehaving or out of control, feel free to go into worship and retrieve their parent to manage the child.
  9. Escort the children to the bathroom. Do not allow them to exit the room unattended.
  10. Escort children whose parents want them to go to Children’s Time during worship.
  11. With the children’s help, clean up the nursery rooms at the end of the hour.
  12. If there is a last minute need for another volunteer, ask another parent, adult or youth you are familiar with to assist or contact Julie for help.

Please make a special effort to greet children and parents with a warm smile and welcoming hello. You are an important part of this growing ministry at Peace Church and very often one of the first contacts new families have to church members. Thank you for your time and support. Please notify the church office, or a member of the Children and Youth Committee if you see needs or have concerns.
